The central challenge in scoring Apollo was to create a truly patriotic American piece that would do justice to the ultimate pioneering story of mankind’s compulsion to explore. Whilst James drew on full expansive orchestral forces and delivered another massive main theme, the work also had to encompass styles from the 1960s pop canon. As such there were forays into pop, rock and country as well as hybrid works touching on the cool jazz of the late 50s.

Using a lot of quartal harmonies, this score broke new ground for the composer and hopefully conjures some of the spirit of a truly monumental human story.
