Lay The Favourite
Romantic Comedy
In 2011, James collaborated with director Stephen Frears on the drama ‘Lay the Favourite’, starring a wealth of Hollywood actors including Catherine Zeta-Jones, Bruce Willis, Vince Vaughn and Joshua Jackson.
The film, which featured in Sundance’s Premieres section, is based on the memoirs of a young woman who becomes a gambler’s assistant in Las Vegas, working for one of the most successful sports gamblers in the business.
James’s score was a quirky, Americana-style soundscape, covering rock, blues & folk genres. James recorded and conducted the London Metropolitan Orchestra at Abbey Road Studios, where he also used a variety of multi-instrumentalists, helping to craft the Americana tone seamlessly into the film’s soundtrack.
